Car Sickness: How To Solve The Problem

Car Sickness

Traveling is beautiful, fun, relaxing and useful, but for many it is also a problem. There are in fact many subjects who suffer from motion sickness, or disorders related to movement. This discomfort is known above all with the name of car sickness, airplane sickness and seasickness, based on the means of transport on which one is. For many it is a real state that conditions their lives, even to spend a quiet evening with friends. It is enough to get in the car (or even on a bus) to feel a heavy sense of nausea that can cause effects that are really unpleasant.

The causes

To define the car sickness from the medical point of view it is necessary to refer to the problems related to balance. The origins of this phenomenon are an incongruity between the vestibular apparatus and the postural system. In a synthetic way, we can define the car sickness as the arrival to the brain of contrasting information: the vestibular apparatus communicates that we are moving, while the postural one is instead in a stable position (generally seated). This confusion generates the malaise that is an invitation from the brain to stop to find balance. Car sickness is especially acute when the movements are sudden and abrupt (when starting and landing aircraft, in sharp car corners or when there are more critical sea conditions). The problem of car sickness is frequent especially in children, who have a greater sensitivity and can therefore perceive this type of discomfort more.

The inconsistency of the information received can be of different types. In fact, those suffering from car sickness may have difficulty both getting on a means of transport and using augmented reality devices, with 3D technology, etc.

Then there are some factors that increase the chances of suffering from this illness. Among these, the most relevant are the possible lack of air, the presence of unpleasant odors, being positioned at a point where there is poor visibility or, again, being particularly anxious and prone to suffering from nausea.

Natural remedies for car sickness and nausea

Car sickness is mainly manifested in the form of nausea, dizziness, pallor, increased sleepiness, increased sweating and, in the most serious cases, even in vomiting and headache. How to fight this problem? Are there any remedies for car sickness?

There are useful tips and preventive strategies to be implemented in order to minimize the discomfort caused by car sickness. Among the useful tips it should be remembered, especially in the car, to prefer to sit in the front seat, keep the window open and try to look at a fixed point or, alternatively, keep your eyes closed. In terms of prevention it is instead useful to relax as much as possible and not to think about the discomfort you are experiencing, as it would increase your perception. You should avoid too heavy meals and try to drink a lot and frequently.

With regards to taking medications or using medical devices it is always preferable to consult your doctor first to avoid contraindications or side effects.
