A skin cyst is a round, fluid-filled lump that develops underneath the skin. While these lumps can be concerning, they are usually harmless, and they often don’t require treatment. However, it is important to have any unexplained lumps checked by a doctor or nurse.

Identifying a Skin Cyst

Skin cysts can appear as round lumps just beneath the surface of the skin and they often contain fluid or pus. You might also notice a small dark spot in the middle of the cyst. They can grow slowly, and they can range in size from smaller than a pea to several centimetres wide. They can appear almost anywhere on the body, including the head, face, neck, chest, back and genital areas. If they get infected, they may become sore and red, though this redness might be less noticeable on darker skin tones.

Treatment Options

Most skin cysts don’t require treatment if they’re not causing a problem. However, medical treatment might be necessary if a cyst becomes infected, because it may need antibiotics. Large or painful cysts that interfere with your daily life might need to be removed – for example, if you have a cyst on your scalp that gets caught while brushing your hair.

Removal Process

Getting a cyst removed is usually a simple procedure that is performed under a local anaesthetic. The area around the cyst is numbed before it is surgically removed. While the procedure will leave a small scar, it’s often better than having an unsightly or problematic cyst. However, new cysts may develop in the future, even after they have been removed. Cysts Manchester, like the examples seen here, https://www.manchesterlumpsclinic.com/common-lumps/cysts/, can be removed under a treatment plan.

Common Causes

While the exact cause of skin cysts isn’t always known, there are several factors that may increase your likelihood of developing them. These include family history, especially for pilar cysts, being middle-aged, being female, having acne or having certain rare conditions like Gardner syndrome. Skin cysts are not cancerous and cannot be transmitted from person to person.
