Garages can be incredibly useful, not only for sheltering your cars/bikes but also as additional rooms/space. What happens when you put your refrigerator in the garage?

Modern refrigerators are extremely sensitive to changes in temperature. This means a refrigerator located in the garage will have to work harder than in the kitchen, for example. This is especially true if the temperatures in the garage can be extreme.

Most refrigerators should be used in temperatures between -17°C and 43°C. Using them in hotter or colder temperatures will reduce their efficiency.

In warmer weather, the refrigerator’s compressor will have to run more to keep the compartment cold. This will require more energy, and parts will wear out faster. For refrigerators with a freezer section, this applies even more. During colder weather, the compressor will cycle on and off more frequently. If the temperature drops too low, the thermostat can fail.

So, is it OK to keep a fridge in the garage?

If you understand all the potential complications, keeping a refrigerator in a garage is not necessarily a bad idea; however, it may be worth considering buying a specially designed outdoor refrigerator if you don’t want to have to modify your garage or if the temperatures where you live can be extreme.
