Sometimes you may notice the appearance of red spots on the skin … What’s that?

If you’ve noticed the appearance of some red spots on your skin or maybe a single red spot the size of a lentil, you’re probably wondering if you need to worry or not.

”How long have you been there?”, “Could it be skin cancer?”, “Will it be the first stage of melanoma?”, “What if it was a harmless spot”? In this article we will try to answer all these questions.

Let’s start by saying that red spots can manifest themselves in many different ways. There are no standard sizes and shapes. In all cases the most common manifestation is that of small dots on the skin.

Often the skin is examined more closely and the number of these small red spots increases. Some of them may be a bit ‘wider, like the patch that could leave a ballpoint pen, others can reach 2 millimeters.
Also, at a closer look, these spots may appear irregularly shaped.

Even the coloring is not always uniform : from pale red (close to pink) to darker.

Some individuals have red spots on their whole body. In these cases the right term to use would be cherry angioma : usually it affects the subjects after 40 years. The stain has a smooth surface and a bright red (just like a cherry). The dermatologist can diagnose it by analyzing the appearance and changes in the size of the stain over time. In all cases a biopsy could be very useful to confirm the diagnosis. Almost always this kind of red spots on the skin is not considered dangerous for human health. One lives it only as an aesthetic “problem”.

Sometimes, however, it can happen to take foods that can cause allergies and therefore the appearance of red spots. The problem can be cured by carrying out laboratory tests to understand personal allergies and thus eliminating certain foods from the diet. The most common foods that cause allergy are egg, dried fruit, cow’s milk and some vegetables.

Why do these red spots appear?

Red spots on the skin appear as a result of various causes. The most common are:

Vasculitis leukoclastic
  • Inflammation of blood vessels, more often than fine capillaries as a result of an infection, medicaments or autoimmune processes.
Schamberg syndrome
  • Benign disorder that manifests itself with red spots such as cayenne pepper on the legs of older people.
  • Passage of blood from the vessels to the skin
  • Caused by scratches and damage to the capillaries.

Note: Any larger or swollen red spots around the ankles may be insect bites: bugs, mosquitoes, fleas, ants, etc.
Also, folliculitis can also causepruritic red pimpleson the skin.

In fact it is very common to cause it without even realizing it. If you notice red spots under the eyes or under the eyebrows or near the bridge of the nose, do not worry about skin cancer. Often there is an extravasation of blood due to a rubbing of the skin in that area . Sometimes even the pressure of a fingernail is enough to relieve an itch. In these cases there is nothing to fear. A very common case is that of individuals who are preparing to play volleyball for the first time or who resume doing so after a long period of stop. The body is no longer accustomed to the strong and sudden pressure due to the ball pressing against the forearms and the next day there are many red spots on the skin that disappear after several days, often fading into orange before disappearing altogether.

The nightmare of skin cancer

Unfortunately, the appearance of red spots on the skin could also be linked to melanoma. Usually it manifests itself as a tiny red dot. Tracing images of melanomas is very easy on Google. Most often they have a brown, purple and black color. However, the possibility that a small red spot is a melanoma in the initial phase is there. Exists. And we have to deal with it without alarming.

Conclusion: General Guidelines

Should you notice a red spot on your skin, do not be alarmed immediately. Watch it. If it does not show signs of fading and going away, then consult a dermatologist who better than any other doctor should be able to tell you whether it is a harmless spot or a melanoma.
